A Brief History
The Department, which was established in 1965 as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics,
became a separate Department in 1970. At present there are six divisions within the Department;
Algebra and the Theory of Numbers, Analysis and the Theory of Functions, Applied Mathematics,
Foundations of Mathematics and Mathematical Logic, Geometry and Topology.
Mathematics provides the basic language of science and engineering, and is not only an ancient discipline,
but also a lively modern subject with an increasing range of new applications in the fields of medicine,
biology and computer science.
